Providence preserves for “important service”
General Braddock’s defeat was devastating news but George Washington’s miraculous escape quickly spread throughout Virginia, where a little over a month later in order to protect frontier families, a voluntary company of riflemen was raised in Hanover Virginia by Captain Overton. On the 17th of August, a well known preacher of the Gospel during the first Great Awakening, Samuel Davies preached a stirring sermon to this company which included a prophetic message concerning the young Washington:
